General Meeting

The next general meeting will be announced.

The last General/Executive Committee Meeting was held on Wednesday October 23, 2013 at the Willows restaurant in Moili'ili prior to the SFPE Hawaii Dinner Presentation. The meeting was open to all SFPE Members. New Hawaii Chapter Officers were elected by unanimous vote of those present.


SFPE Hawaii Professional Practice Committee:

The broad purpose of this committee is to deal with issues affecting practicing fire protection engineers on both a local, national, and international basis. Topics with which Hawaii SFPE is currently involved that falls under the purview of this committee are professional licensing issues, support of the FPE PE Exam, and PE Exam Preparation. A new initiative to be undertaken by this committee will be to liaison with agencies that use fire protection engineering services. Through this liaison SFPE Hawaii will address issues affecting our members with the goal of improving the level of fire protection engineering services provided to all. Participation is not be limited to SFPE members.

The last Professional Practice Committee meeting was held November 19, 2013. The Committee held a Working Session to provide input to the next edition of UFC 3-600-01 Fire Protection Engineering for Facilities. This was a coordinated effort to provide recommenations for improvement to the DoD fire protection engineering community.


SFPE Hawaii FPE Exam Study Group:

The last SFPE Hawaii FPE Exam Study Group was held August-October 2011. The study group met weekly at 5:00 pm. There were be approximately 12 sessions. Each session was 2 hours with the first hour spent discussing the topic and the second hour spent on problem solving. Each study group member was asked to lead the discussion for one topic. All SFPE Hawaii members and chapter friends were welcome to participate; there was no charge to attend. Those interested in participating in the next FPE Exam Study Group should contact Sam Dannaway. Volunteers to help teach topics are always welcome.

State of Hawaii Building Code Council Meetings:

SFPE Hawaii participates on the State of Hawaii Building Code Council by providing technical analysis and coordination of proposed amendments to the International Building Code for adoption as the State of Hawaii Building Code.

State Building Code Council Investigative Committee on Residential Fire Sprinklers

SFPE Hawaii participated on this investigative committee formed by the SBCC. The committee held meetings and provided pertinent information, address stakeholder concerns, and explored the impacts these requirements will have on the community. These “talk story” sessions were promoted by Committee co-chairs Battalion Chief Socrates Bratakos of the Honolulu Fire Department and Tim Hiu of the Department of Planning and Permitting. Meetings were open to all interested parties. The efforts of the committee culminated in the issuance of a report.

AIA Center for Building Performance (Codes Committee) Meetings:

SFPE Hawaii participates on the AIA Codes Committee by providing technical analysis and coordination of proposed amendments to the building codes. Please email Mel Harano for information or if you are interested in attending the AIA Center for Building Performance (Codes Committee) meetings.

Residential High Rise Fire Safety Task Force Meetings:

FPE Exam Problem Writing Workshops

SFPE Hawaii held the most recent problem writing workshop for the FPE exam on Friday February 20, 2017. The workshop was led by Chris Jelenewicz, Senior Manager, Engineering Practice for SFPE Headquarters. The workshop was open to engineers who have already passed the FPE exam. SFPE is responsible for maintaining the FPE exam, so SFPE members are needed to help develop problems for the exam. The workshop was held at Coffman Engineers (former office of S.S. Dannaway Associates, Inc.)

Previous problem writing workshops with Chris Jelenewicz were held on February 13, 2015, February 24, 2014; February 22, 2013; February 24, 2012; February 24, 2011; April 1, 2009; and March 14, 2008.

SFPE Hawaii Joint Meeting With ASHRAE Hawaii
Date: Thursday October 13, 2005
Time: 5:00pm - 8:30pm with dinner at 6:00pm and the program at 7:00pm
Location: Ala Moana Hotel, Ilima Room (second floor)
Cost: $25 for members and $15 for students
SFPE Hawaii and ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning Engineers) Hawaii held a joint meeting. Sam Dannaway gave a presentation on life safety requirements in HVAC titled, "A Comparison of Requirements in the 1997 Uniform Building Code and the 2003 International Building Code". Also, the University of Hawaii mechanical engineering senior students gave a presentation of their senior design project.

NFPA 5000 and NFPA 1, A Brief Overview

Cost: $25 ($20 for SFPE Members & Chapter Friends, AIA Members, and Building & Fire Officials)
Our guest speaker was Ray Bizal, P.E., Western Regional Manager for the National Fire Protection Association. Mr. Bizal provided an overview of the NFPA code making process, NFPA 5000 Building and Construction Safety Code, and NFPA 1 Uniform Fire Code to the audience.   Attendees included members of the Building Department, Fire Department, Healthcare Industry, Insurance Industry, and the Architectural Engineering Community.
