History

The Hawaii Chapter of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers was chartered in 1964 with the following charter members.

Roger W. Parlee, P.E. Edward Danzinger Richard Soelberg
Douglas V. MacMahon, P.E. James Belew Eugene Plischke

Other earlier members included Frank Sommerfield (the last Fire Marshall in Hawaii), Newton Pratt, George Kono, Keith Swanholm, Carl J. Smith.

In 1976 the chapter became inactive for nine years. In 1987 the chapter was re-energized and from a nucleus of seven SFPE members has grown to approximately 50 SFPE members and 80 chapter friends. Our SFPE members consist mostly of consulting engineers with some representation from government, insurance, and contracting sectors.

Major accomplishments of SFPE Hawaii include:
  1. Ongoing participation in the Honolulu Building Code Advisory Committee.
  2. Ongoing participation in the Hawaii AIA Codes Committee.
  3. Ongoing particication in the State Fire Code Council Advisory Board.
  4. Providing fire protection and life safety seminars for the local engineering community.
  5. Providing educational outreach to local schools and colleges.

The University of Hawaii formally withdrew from the competition on June 1, 2011.

The competition challenges collegiate students to design, build, and operate solar-powered houses that are cost-effective, energy-efficient, attractive, and easy to live in. The competition was held from September 23 through October 2, 2011 at the National Mall in Washington D.C. One of the required elements in the competition was a fully functional residential fire sprinkler system as required by the 2009 edition of the International Residential Code (IRC). SFPE Hawaii Chapter provided support on the fire and life safety aspects of the design competition to Weilin Qu, PhD, Assistant Professor of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and his students who are involved with the competition.
